Climate change and winter (sports) tourism

Actors and destinations in winter (sports) tourism will have to face three major challenges in the future. First, climate change is leading to a decrease in snow reliability and snowmaking potential in many destinations, resulting in a decrease in the number of operational and optimal ski days. Second, winter (sports) tourists are adapting their travel behaviour to these changed winter sports conditions. Third, demographic change, i.e. ageing tourists and changing leisure behaviour, has an additional influence on future demand. This chapter addresses these issues using the example of selected German winter sports destinations to estimate the impact of climate and demographic change on demand and future turnover as well as to examine the changed travel behaviour of winter (sports) tourists. The results clearly show how much the winter sports market will change and how destinations are forced to act to remain part of the winter sports market in the future.
